Voting is OPEN! Here's why you should take part...

Tuesday 20-10-2020 - 08:46

It’s that time of year again! Candidates have been nominated, manifestos have been written, and they’re all ready to fight for your vote! It’s the first term Part-Time Officer and NUS Delegates Elections, and it’s a super important time of year in our calendars. Why? Because this is a chance for us to do what we do best, to continue our mission of passing the microphone to our students and helping them to create the change they want to see in the university!

Our candidates have been super busy over the past few weeks getting everything ready for this Election, from drafting and redrafting their manifestos to planning how they’re going to gain your vote! Some of them are running for the first time and some of them are trying to keep a hold of their seat, but all of them have some incredible ideas for how they can make LJMU a better place for their community.

Our Part-Time Officers and NUS Delegates play hugely vital roles at JMSU, they are the champions of change. They bring the fresh ideas; the new perspectives and we help them to make their ideas a reality! What inspires this change? Simply put, all of you! Every single one of you is represented by either one of our Part-Time Officers or our NUS Delegates, some are you are even represented by more than one! This means that when you talk about your experience, it is your Officer & Delegate’s jobs to listen to you and do everything they can to improve your experience.

Why should I vote?

It's no secret that things are different this year, and that is exactly why it is more important to vote now than ever. The situation we are currently in with remote learning, isolation and ever-changing restrictions is new to everybody. This doesn’t mean, though, that the higher powers get a free pass and are free from criticism. It is still their job to make sure you have everything you need to successfully complete your qualification in a safe, secure environment and to have an amazing time while you do it!

It is the job of the Part-Time Officers and the NUS Delegates to fight for this, to communicate to the university, the local government and sometimes the national government exactly what you are experiencing. It is their job to advocate for your needs, champion your wins and ensure you and the rest of your community are heard!

We don’t yet know when the pandemic will be over, or when we will be able to go back to normal, or even when the current restrictions will be eased. What we do know, is that our students deserve transparency, fair treatment, empathy and understanding. We do know that our Part-Time Officers and NUS Delegates will fight for this for you.

Have your say!

Another reason you should vote is simply to have your say! The thing with voting and Elections is some candidates are going to win whether you decide to vote or not, and they are going to represent you and your needs whether you vote or not. Isn’t it better to cast your vote and have a say in who you want to represent you?

Each candidate has a manifesto that contains a list of issues they want to address, goals they want to achieve and change they want to create. You may agree with some of them, and you may disagree with others. This is why it’s important for you to have your say in who gets elected so that the issues you care deeply about are being addressed.
