Join us Friday 10 May as we celebrate the wonderful nursing cohorts in our LJMU community at our International Nurses Day event. We will be providing a whole host of activities throughout the day filled with fun, freebies, and delicious food. We will be joined by the Yoga Society who will be giving a mini meditation session, as well as the Royal College of Nursing and NHS Brand ambassadors.

We spoke to Amy and Sophie, committee members of the Nursing Society. Here’s why International Nursing Day is important to them as society members…

Hi! My name is Amy, and I am a 32-year-old third-year mental health nursing student. Growing up, I never really imagined myself as a nurse because my mum is one - following in her footsteps always felt too predictable. I wanted to be edgy. I realised as I got a bit older that I just want to help people and nursing felt like the perfect career to do that. Here I am - three years into my program, president of the nursing society and nearly ready to qualify! I chose mental health nursing because I wanted to help change people's perceptions of mental illness and advocate for those with the smallest voices in society.

I helped set up the nursing society in January 2023, acting as vice president. Ava and I had the mutual vision of creating a community of student nurses across all fields to share experiences and tips that we’ve picked up along the way. We also wanted to put on events to give nursing students a well-deserved break. Being a part of the society for the past two years has distracted me from the chaos of my personal life, helped me through the hardest days on placement, taught me things I would never have known otherwise, and I’ve met the most amazing friends by being a part of it!

International Nurses Day is important to me because it’s a day of reflection. I’m so thankful for all of the amazing nurses in my life and those who have looked after my family members over the years, brightening even the darkest of days. It’s not an easy job being a nurse, and it requires a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (not all of them your own)! I think we work really hard and deserve to be celebrated!

Hey, my names Sophie, I’m 26 and studying mental health nursing. I decided I wanted to become a mental health nurse due to my own journey with mental health. What really stuck with me was one of the only professionals I dealt with who showed true compassion and understanding was a mental health nurse. Once I started to become well again, I decided I wanted to become a mental health nurse and be that person for others.

I joined the society to find like-minded people who are dedicated to supporting other nursing students through placements, university, and life. Join, you won’t regret it!
