Lauren

Hi! My name is Lauren Wright, president of Feminist society at JMSU! Being part of the committee this year has been such an amazing experience that opened up so many great opportunities for me, such as meeting some amazing new people, working with wonderful charities such as Period Project Merseyside, collaborating with other societies (even from Uni of Liverpool!) and getting involved with JMSU, who truly care about the student experience and do everything they can to make it as fun as possible.

Moving to Liverpool was so scary for me, especially after moving to Liverpool in my first year during the Covid-19 pandemic and being unable to stay due to lockdowns. I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to make any new friends as I felt that everyone had already found their friendships groups when I started my 2nd year. This wasn’t the case; I felt right at home when I first joined the Feminist Society as everyone was so welcoming, had very similar interests to me. Starting conversations and making friends was so easy. I knew straight away that I wanted to be part of the committee as I enjoyed every session, social and event thoroughly – from hosting our stall at Freshers Fair to coordinating our ‘Empowered Campus’ event with Survivors Society.

The society awards night in March was the best event of the year, and it was so reaffirming to be recognised for all our hard work. When we won Best Community and Interests Society of the Year, I was so thrilled; we had always strived to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible, and I was so happy that we were able to achieve that goal. What shocked me was that I also won Committee Member of the Year. I knew of so many dedicated people that give their all to their societies, so I was honoured to receive an award that I knew so many people deserved.

Although I’m proud to be graduating LJMU, I’m so sad to leave the Feminist Society and JMSU. But, as an alumnus of the group, I’m so happy that I can still come to sessions and socials even though my studies have ended. JMSU gives recent graduates like me the fantastic opportunity to stay connected to our friends at LJMU, which is especially important to me as I really feel like Liverpool is my home now!

By being a part of a society and as a committee member, you are not only given the opportunity to make friends, but are also able to gain lifechanging experience to include on your CV. I have transferrable skills in leadership, organisation, and coordination – all the traits of a committee member can be paralleled into the working world, post-graduation. It is a lot of commitment, but so worth it. It is one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had - I will forever be proud of what I have achieved, as well as my fellow committee members, and can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for all of us!
