Join the LJMU Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team and learn how to do a Bioblitz on campus!

A BioBlitz is when a group of people meet to identify and record as many species of plants, animals and other organisms as possible at a specific location within a short period of time. This is a form of citizen science – where members of the public collect or report data to help scientists study a particular topic. This means that those without specialist training can contribute to valuable data collection for research, conservation and biodiversity monitoring, whilst also enjoying an opportunity to get outside, meet new people and connect with nature!

We’ll be holding two BioBlitz events as part of the Campus Nature Challenge. The Campus Nature Challenge aims to increase opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to connect to nature on their campuses and in their communities, with the hope of fostering environmental stewardship, generating scientifically valuable data, and advancing conservation, particularly in urban settings.

As you take part, you’ll be supporting our biodiversity monitoring on campus by recording species and uploading them to the iNaturalist app. After joining the session, as you’ll have learnt how it works, you can use this both on or off campus, or you can organise your own BioBlitz in the future!

This event is open to anyone from any course, and everyone is welcome!

When and where?

Friday 24^th April, 12pm - 2pm - meet outside James Parsons Reception at Byrom Street.

If you are unable to join for the full time that is no problem at all! You're welcome to join for as long as you're able to. If you are joining later, please contact Nina Raza at N.S.Raza@ljmu.ac.uk to see where the group are up to!

What do I need to bring?

Your smartphone if you have one. If you are able to download the ‘iNaturalist’ app beforehand, that would be really handy. If you’re particularly interested in birds we also recommend downloading the ‘Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab’ app. Both apps are free and available for both apple and android phones. 

What should I wear?

Please dress for the weather. Wear something warm/ waterproof if the weather is cold/ wet; suncream if it’s sunny!

Who can attend?

Anyone from any course. Theres no need to be a biodiversity or conservation specialist!
