Starting university is an exciting time, it’s a big transition to move to a new city and meet new people. Living on your own can be daunting, and it’s normal to miss friends, family and home. Here are some simple ways to make Liverpool feel more like home.
📱 1. Stay Connected - It’s comforting to stay in touch with loved ones. A quick call, message or facetime can lift your mood and make you feel like you still have home comforts around you. Try not to spend all your time in your room, give yourself time to build new friendships.
🎓 2. Get involved in Campus Life - One of the best ways to feel settles is to get stuck into university life. JMSU runs lots of free events throughout the year. From days out to craft events, there is something for everyone. You can find all our upcoming events on our website or Instagram. Another great way to settle into student life is to join a society or sports team. This is a great way to learn a new sport, meet new people and take part in social events. Check out the society section to see the full list of societies.
🤝 3. Join our Buddy Scheme - If you’re looking for a friendly face and someone who understands what you’re going through, our Buddy Scheme is a great place to start. We’ll match you with another student who can offer advice, chat about student life or even just meet for a coffee. This is a great way to help you find your feet in Liverpool and a lovely way to make genuine connections. Sign up to the Buddy Scheme on our website.
🚶♀️4. Stay Active - Going for a walk around your new city, joining the gym or even going for a wander round campus can instantly ease your mind and cheer you up. Exercise and getting out in the sunlight will help you manage your mood, maintain energy levels and help you feel in control. Join the LJMU gym, it’s discounted and super affordable for students, with amazing equipment, great fitness classes and a friendly atmosphere that makes it easy to stay active and meet new people.
💖 5. Be Kind to Yourself - Remember that adjusting takes time. Everyone settles in at their own pace, so don’t put pressure on yourself to feel “at home” right away. Celebrate the small wins whether that’s cooking your first meal in halls or joining your first society. Give yourself credit for taking a big step!
