Why Liverpool Women’s Hospital?
The women’s hospital is an integral part of Liverpool history, spanning centuries and dating back to 1796 when it was first set up as the Ladies’ Charity to provide home-based care for expectant mothers. It became a specialised institution for women - a revolutionary idea at the time as childbirth was a real risk during the 19th and early 20th century.
In 1995, the building we all know as the women’s hospital was opened by Princess Diana, and it exists today as an NHS Foundation Trust - the largest specialist hospital dedicated to women in Europe, well-known for neonatal care, and pioneering work in IVF. It holds a special place in local history - and if you’re from Liverpool, you were probably born there!
