Could you be a School Representative?

School Representatives are lead academic student representatives at LJMU, bringing together feedback from Course Representatives and students to identify themes, influence change, support academic quality, and champion an inclusive student experience.

You will work alongside VP Education, Teaching and Learning Academy staff, Faculty Education & Student Experience Committee members, JMSU staff, and course reps to collect feedback from a diverse range of students and make a real difference to academic life at LJMU.

The role pays £14.79 per hour (honoraria) for up to 20 hours per term.

Who we are looking for
Are you the right person?

Any LJMU student is eligible to apply. It is desirable but not essential that you have been a course representative or student leader at an educational institution previously. There are a limited number of positions available and interviews will take place in July and August.

Essential criteria

Current LJMU student in 2026/2027

Comfortable talking in meetings and sharing feedback professionally

Able to communicate clearly and confidently in person, by email and telephone

Good time management and organisational skills

A proactive approach with the ability to think creatively and critically

Strong project and event planning skills

Passionate about student and academic representation

Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

Evidence of Right to Work in the UK

Desirable criteria

Experience as a course representative or school representative

Knowledge of student engagement, community building and student union operations

Ability to gather and compile feedback

Knowledge of lived experience and barriers of underrepresented groups in Higher Education


Responsibilities
What you will be doing

The role spans the full academic year with a range of structured activities and flexible engagement opportunities. Here is what you can expect to be involved in.

Training, networking & profile creation

Join JMSU and the Teaching and Learning Academy in August or September with your fellow school reps. Meet key stakeholders, learn about your role, and have a professional photo taken for the JMSU website.

Course rep training

Help train and prepare new and returning course reps from September to November, with optional hours for new cohorts in January and February. You will attend a Train the Trainer session over the summer to prepare you.

Pre-Faculty Education Committee

Attend the pre-FESEC (Faculty Education Student Experience Committee) from September to June. You will sit with Associate Deans and officers, feeding back on key topics and themes from across your school. Usually bi-monthly (monthly for Business School).

Student Leader Day & Course Rep Conference

Collaborate with fellow students during term time to co-create intervention strategies and shape action plans across LJMU. Help facilitate sessions with course reps. Dates to be confirmed.

Student Survey Season

Champion student feedback mechanisms, join the Student Advisory Group, and help drive engagement with key surveys such as the National Student Survey and First Year Student Experience survey. Dates to be confirmed.

Check-in meetings

Regular catch-ups with VP Education and the Academic Communities and Representation Coordinator from September to June. You will also meet once per term with your school's Associate Dean alongside JMSU staff and officers.

Topical sessions

Share your perspective as a student and leader at topical sessions throughout both terms. These sessions help inform JMSU and the university, steering meaningful work and change.

JMSU engagement activity

Speak to course reps and students across your school and get involved in events and engagement activity — pop-ups, social media, or your own creative ideas — while collecting insight for your role.

Student Experience Awards

Lead the SEAs by shortlisting nominees, deciding winners, and presenting at the awards ceremony in May. Up to 10 hours, April to June.

Interview

Each candidate will attend a formal interview with JMSU staff and officers before being offered the role. Questions will be shared in advance and a task will be required, you can choose from a range of options such as a presentation or scenario. The meeting lasts 30 minutes and can be in person or online. Interviews take place in July and August.

Note for international students

A student visa for full-time degree level studies allows you to work or volunteer for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time. Please check the LJMU guidelines and any restrictions specific to your circumstances before applying.

Got questions?
Do I need to be a current course representative to apply?

No! Any LJMU student is eligible to apply. It is desirable but not essential that you have been a course rep or student leader previously.

How much will I be paid and when?

You will receive an honoraria payment based on £14.79 per hour (plus 12.07% holiday pay) for up to 20 hours per term. Payments are made in November, January and June and are subject to Tax and National Insurance deductions.

What does the interview involve?

A 30 minute formal interview with JMSU staff and officers. Questions will be shared in advance and you will need to complete a task, you can choose from options such as a presentation or scenario. Interviews can be in person or online and take place in July and August.

How many school rep positions are available?

There are a limited number of positions. If demand is high and there are more applicants than positions, appointments will be made based on candidates' demonstration of the criteria outlined in this role profile.

Can international students apply?

Yes, if your visa permits you to work or volunteer up to 20 hours per week during term time. Please check LJMU guidelines and your specific visa conditions before applying.

Is this the same as being a course representative?

No! These are separate roles. If you are already a course rep, the school rep role and its responsibilities and payments are separate from your course rep duties, which remain a voluntary role.
