Disclaimer

This does not prevent students from creating or joining pro-choice and pro-life societies, or from organising events that matter to them. You can find out more about the reasons here.

It also does not affect any ongoing or future student- or officer-led campaigns.

We encourage respect for all views and ensure a safe space for healthy discussions. If you experience or witness any incidents of hate or discrimination, please remember the values of Respect Always . Report any concerns via Report & Support.

What happens if it’s passed?

If the motion passes, it becomes official JMSU Policy, meaning we are constitutionally bound to act on it.

An implementation plan will then be signed off, and JMSU will begin work to put the policy into action.

What happens if it doesn’t pass?

If the motion does not pass, it will not be implemented, and JMSU will not declare itself a pro-choice campus.

The motion cannot return to the Student Forum within the same academic year.

Examples of Hate Crimes

Both hate crimes and hate incidents can take many forms. It isn’t always physical violence, but it does include physical assault and damage to property. It could be someone using offensive language or making insulting gestures. It could also be someone posting rude or abusive messages online.

Student Proposal

The Pro-Choice Campus Policy Proposal seeks to ensure that the Students' Union provides comprehensive support to students in making informed decisions about their reproductive health. This proposal outlines the importance of supporting students facing pregnancy by offering access to clear, unbiased information on their legal rights and options, ensuring a safe and supportive environment. By adopting this policy, JMSU would commit to providing factual resources, addressing misinformation, and safeguarding students from undue pressure or intimidation. The goal is to foster an inclusive campus where every student feels empowered to make choices that align with their individual circumstances, in line with current legal rights.

The Pro-Choice Campus Policy

  1. Declare John Moore Student Union as a Pro-Choice campus, ensuring that women and pregnant individuals know they have the full support of the Student Union, regardless of the choice they make.
  2. Present pregnancy and abortion information in a neutral, unbiased manner, ensuring medical accuracy and using credible sources.
  3. Protect pregnant persons from those who would try to intimidate or coerce them while they access services that provide information about pregnancy and abortion.
  4. Provide up-to-date information on pregnancy and abortion and details on where to seek medical help, placed in women’s safe spaces like toilet stalls, so that vulnerable women can access this information privately.
  5. Combat misinformation on sensitive subject matters such as the pro-choice vs pro-life debate, as failure to scrutinise sensitive topics can be potentially very dangerous to women at the university.
  6. Work with relevant charities and organisations to raise awareness of legal rights and available services related to pregnancy and abortion, ensuring that any collaboration aligns with the Student Union’s charitable purposes.

In summary, the JMSU Policy Proposal is a significant step toward ensuring that every student has access to clear, accurate information about their reproductive rights and options. By adopting this policy, the student union will support students in making informed choices, protect them from external pressures, and address misinformation. This proposal upholds reproductive autonomy while reinforcing the student union's commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students, in line with legal rights and responsibilities.
