What your Student Officers do for you☝

Being a Student Officer puts the power in your hands to make positive change across campus and beyond for the good of LJMU students.

If you would like to steer the lead for change, nominate yourself to become a Student Officer today.

Here are just a few changes Student Officers have made:

Cost of Living initiative✍

Your Student Officers worked hard to launch the Cost of Living Hub with the university to ensure that support was and still is given out to students during the Cost of Living crisis, increasing the university's fund from £1.6million to £2.2million. You can check out the Cost of Living Hub here.

Extension evidence removal❎

applying for essay or exam extension has previously been a lengthy process and may have caused frustration for students. Student Officers have been worked alongside LJMU Academic Registry and have successfully implemented a simple-step process that students can now use to apply for an extension if in need, removing the hardship around applying for extensions.

Central space for students: SLB🏡

After living in spaces across Liverpool which were less accessible for students, Student Officer teams spanning 10 years responded to student feedback and supported the development of the Student Life Building, a flagship venue in the heart of the city centre where JMSU now lives and students can visit easily to make the most of our opportunities and services.

Cheaper gym memberships🤸‍♂️

Worked with LJMU sport to decrease the gym membership for students to just £25 per year.

Supporting International students🌍

Petitioned for the working hours campaign, successfully passing the campaign at the National Union of Students conference, ensuring the campaign will be a top priority for NUS to address.

Heat so students can eat🍴

When a student suggested more spaces be made available to heat up food whilst on campus, the Student Officers lobbied the University to take action. As a result, students can now enjoy microwave lunches and make use of hot water taps at JMSU Social Spaces across campus and in the Student Life Building.

Free period products🙌

After a research project led by JMSU found that students were either not coming into university or leaving early due to lack of access to period products, the Student Officer team successfully campaigned for menstrual products to be available free of charge in all LJMU toilets. This campaign was the first comprehensive, unlimited scheme at a university in England.

Extended laptop loans over winter holidays💻

During Christmas 2021, the Student Officer team responded to student cries for additional equipment support over the holidays and successfully lobbied the University to extend the laptop loan scheme over the Winter break.

Module book rescue scheme📚

When student talk turned to their living spaces being cluttered by old module books, it was Student Officers who worked with the library’s to develop Module Book Rescue scheme – and now students can keep their accommodation decluttered whilst helping fellow students to save money and the planet. All books given to Module Book Rescue will be made available for new and returning students to collect, free of charge.
