About JMSU
Freedom of speech statement
At JMSU, we're committed to upholding freedom of speech within the law. Open dialogue, respectful challenge and the exchange of diverse views are essential to student life and democracy.
We support our members to speak up, question ideas and have meaningful conversations, even when the topics are complex or uncomfortable.

What we believe

Everyone has the right to be heard

As long as it's within the law and doesn't cause harm.

Diverse perspectives strengthen us

We welcome conversations shaped by different backgrounds, beliefs and experiences.

Respect matters

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences. Hate, discrimination and violence have no place here.

Our role

  1. Champion student voice while keeping our spaces safe and inclusive
  2. Encourage thoughtful discussion and critical thinking
  3. Support students to disagree well and engage respectfully

Why this matters

Freedom of speech is central to academic life and personal growth. It lets students explore ideas, confront difficult topics, and grow as individuals and communities.

Our commitment

We're here to help you navigate expression responsibly, with:

What is a hate crime?

A hate crime is a criminal offence that is perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person's race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or transgender identity.
JMSU does not tolerate hate crimes in any form, and works to keep a safe, respectful environment for all students.

External speakers

Student-led events with external speakers must follow our approval process, so every contribution aligns with our values and legal responsibilities.
