Leaving your accommodation this summer? Leave Liverpool Tidy!

Tuesday 05-05-2026 - 09:54

The time has come to start thinking about clearing out your houses/halls/rooms and getting ready for your next step, whether that's moving down the road or taking the leap to a new adventure.

JMSU is hosting a Leave Liverpool Tidy day of action on 11th May to help make your clear out a little bit easier – and more sustainable!

The way it works is simple - gather all the stuff that you do not wish to move to your new place (such as clothes, kitchen equipment, housing decorations or tinned food), and bring them to one of our drop-off points to be collected and repurposed! This year we have a focus on textbooks and books too as part of Erin's book campaign.

📌 The drop-off location will be the Student Life Building, which will be open from 10am-4.00pm.

What can I donate? 🤔

Items we'll be collecting include:

  • Household items i.e. pots, plates, cutlery etc
  • Small electrical items (working order)
  • Clothing, shoes and accessories (in good condition)
  • Books and textbooks - this will be kept aside for Erin's book campaign
  • Non-perishable food items (unopened dried foods, tins and jars still in date)
  • Small items of furniture will only be accepted at the Smithdown drop-off location.

🚫 Please note: we're not able to accept any duvets, pillows, knives, or broken/dirty items, so please make other arrangements for these.

When and where can I donate? 📅

We are launching Leave Liverpool Tidy with a day of action on 11th May.

  • Student Life Building, 10 Copperas Hill, Liverpool, L3 5AH
    • Accepting donations from 10.00am–4.00pm

    • No furniture will be accepted here - thank you!

How do I donate? 📦

Just turn up to the main entrance at SLB on 11th May. Make sure that you arrive during the times listed above. Check back on the day as some of these times are subject to change!

Please make sure that you follow the instructions and rules for donating items, as if your items do not meet the LLT criteria, then you will need to take them away with you.

✅ Make sure your donations are:

  • Clean
  • In working condition and not broken
  • Furniture items – please do not bring any large furniture items such as mattresses, sofas, or dining tables. Small items will be accepted.

What is Leave Liverpool Tidy? ♻️

Leave Liverpool Tidy (LLT) is a huge project, in collaboration with some of our charity partners including Wirral Hospice and MICAH, that helps give you opportunities to donate your unwanted items and transform your trash into someone else's treasure.

JMSU are working with LJMU and The Guild, University of Liverpool, Liverpool City Council and other community partners on this huge cross city effort!

From donations to litter picks to support your community, there are lots of ways you can get involved with the project and help leave our city shining.

Why should I donate my unwanted items to Leave Liverpool Tidy? ♻️

All donations received will go to support local charities and people in need. On some occasions we will also be running incentives for your donations subject to availability.

What should I do if my items are not accepted? 🗑️

We do our best to try and accept as many of your unwanted items but if we can't collect it there are lots of other options for your donations:

  • For information about goods that cannot be donated, visit the Liverpool Council website for guidance on what can be disposed of in your local bins.
  • Not all plastics can be recycled easily. Visit Terracycle's website to find drop-off points for materials that are not recycled by your local recycling company.
  • For bulky items that cannot be donated to British Heart Foundation, visit Liverpool City Council's website and book a collection.
  • Students can request collections of bulky items by emailing environmentalservices@liverpool.gov.uk after 21st May 2026.
  • JMSU reception will continue to receive your books and textbooks from 11th May onwards through the summer.

Can I donate my stuff at my student accommodation? 🏢

Yes – some Halls of Accommodation and PBSAs are also accepting donations so check in with your reception at your accommodation to see if they are supporting Leave Liverpool Tidy.

I'm not moving out yet – can I donate my items another time? 🏠

There are two more Community Days of Action on 29th and 30th June.

You'll be able to drop off donations on these dates at Kensington Fields Community Centre and Smithdown ASDA from 10am–3pm. More information to follow and will be available from The Guild of Students as they are heading up Leave Liverpool Tidy.

Can I help on the day? 🙋

Absolutely – this is a huge project and we need lots of help. If you're interested, sign up here: Leave Liverpool Tidy - One off volunteering.

There is also a planned Litter Pick organised by LJMU Sustainability Team – so if you want to join us for this activity – meet at SLB main entrance at 10.45am for an hour. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear and ensure you have prepared with sun screen too!

I have a question about Leave Liverpool Tidy - who can I ask? 💭

You can contact jmsuvolunteering@ljmu.ac.uk to ask a question about LLT.
