Alexandria - VP Community and Wellbeing 23/24

Hi! I’m Alexandria, VP Community and Wellbeing for JMSU.

😍 Favourite thing/s to do: I love cooking/ building Lego

βœ… My green flags: I’m a good listener and I try to always help people have a positive outlook on things

🚩 My red flag: I’m always late – despite sometimes getting ready hours before!

🀲 One word to describe me: Kind

πŸ‘‹ One word to describe JMSU: Welcoming

πŸ’¬ One thing I am willing to do to step out of my comfort zone this year: Get involved in a lot more public speaking.

Don’t be afraid to try new things!

My manifesto aims πŸ‘‡

Wellbeing support & therapy animals visiting campus

  • Wellbeing Wednesdays – Working with JMSU events team and officers on hosting wellbeing events on the last Wednesday of each month to promote wellbeing amongst students, particularly around stressful times of the year such as exam periods. Examples of these events will include sessions to help with: physical wellbeing (e.g., yoga) and mental wellbeing (e.g., craft making).
  • Working with the Health & Safety team to plan events for therapy dogs from a charity to visit LJMU campuses to help support the mental health and wellbeing of LJMU students.
  • World Animal Day (4th October) - Helped to lead a volunteer event to celebrate World Animal Day. Over two days, volunteers, with the guidance of Dr Julia Nowack, set up Hedgehog tracker tunnels and cameras across Liverpool John Moores University campuses, hoping to observe these creatures in action and locate their habitats.

Despite dedicated efforts, no Hedgehogs were recorded, but valuable wildlife footage, including a young fox at the John Lennon Art Building gardens, was captured. Although unsuccessful in Hedgehog sightings, the initiative sparked student interest in the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Society.

Support for safer student nightlife

βœ… Student safety packs

Safety packs have been created for students and distributed in various locations e.g., Fresher’s Fair, pop-up unions, some items have been put out in the SLB for students to take when they need them (example of items in the packs: reusable drinks covers, drinks spiking test strips, condoms, information leaflet with LJMU & JMSU support services).

βœ… Night-time Guardian

Night-time Guardian recruitment and promotion has been successful, and the Guardians will be fully trained by 15th November and ready to go out after dates have been set by lead staff (Gabby Sale, Alastair Grills, Alexandria Jones).

βœ… Club Health International Conference

Attended the Club Health International conference in Liverpool, which was hosted by LJMU, Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership, and Nighttime Economy Solutions. There were also aspects of student safety which were included, which have been insightful and helped to shape my manifesto goals even more. Topics included:

  • Diversity and inclusion (making nightlife safer and more equitable)
  • Drink, drugs and related health behaviours (preventing and mitigating harm)
  • Violence (preventing and responding to violence against women and girls, sexual violence, exploitation and terrorism)
  • Mental health and nightlife
  • Digital technology

βœ… Elimination of Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG) day (25th November)

Planned an event at the SLB on Friday 24th November, the day before EVAWG (Saturday 25th November), for students to attend and find out what support services are available to them.

During the event, various charities such as RASA & WHISC were there to talk to student about the services they offer. There was also be a banner making session where students can attend to make banners for the march and vigil that took place in the city centre on the 25th.

This was in collaboration with various societies such as: Survivors, Feminist, LGBTQ+, Women in STEM, and Psychology.

Travel and accommodation support

βœ… Officers from the Guild (University of Liverpool SU) have approached JMSU officers about support for bringing back the night bus. JMSU officers have signed the pledge in support, as well as LJMU.

βœ… Know Your Rights booklet – Working with Rachel Stalker from the Legal Advice Centre to distribute the Know Your Rights booklet, which was an initiative started by a previous officer. The booklet aims to inform students of their rights and how to get support on various issues such as: renting, harassment, discrimination etc.

  • Working with Shaquita on transport paper which has been sent to ELT after being supported at the COL WG.
  • Accommodation Drop Ins – Collaborating with Liverpool Student Homes and the SAW Student Living Team to arrange a housing awareness drop-in event in December. This will aim to alleviate the pressure on students searching for housing shortly after starting university, providing valuable guidance and support.

Planning to have multiple drop ins throughout the academic year to make sure students are being supported with their accommodation/housing.
