So, you’re keen to take part in the JMSU recycling competition? You’ve come to the right place! Read on to find out more information and see how you can get involved.
From 17th to 18th of February, recycling your waste could earn you and your hall of residence lots of eco-friendly prizes!
These include decorative items, reusable items, plants and chocolates. You can also be in with the chance of winning a ticket to Go-Ape© by sending evidence something good you’ve already done for the planet (since 1st of February 2024). This can be anything from taking part in this recycling competition to doing something like volunteering - just send your evidence to your JMSU President, Brenin, to enter the draw. You can email president@ljmu.ac.uk or search “jmsupresident” on Instagram.
To take part in the recycling competition, check that you currently reside in one of the following 20 accommodations:
Then, identify a JMSU marked bin in your store area to use.
If yours displays mixed recycling, it will accept:
Non-shredded paper, newspapers, letters, cardboard, cereal boxes, empty egg boxes, glass bottles, jars, clean tins, empty aerosols, non-greasy aluminium foil, plastic bottles, clean pots and tubs. But check plastics with recycling symbols 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE)
If yours displays plastic, it will accept:
Bottles, empty shampoo and bleach, cleaning products, clean plastic tubs, soft plastics, crisp packets. Check plastics with recycling symbols 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE)
If yours displays cardboard, it will accept:
Non-shredded paper, newspapers, letters, cardboard, cereal boxes, empty egg boxes, toilet roll tubes.
Do not try to recycle wet or greasy cardboard like pizza boxes, items with excessive sticky tape, polystyrene inserts or bubble wrap.
Each bin will be audited, and your hall will gain points for accepted waste items - but any contaminating general waste will reduce points. The winning hall will have the largest percentage of waste correctly recycled compared to the number of flats. So, get recycling and best of luck!
Also, take note - LJMU will be changing its recycling bins on campus and introducing new food waste bins soon. So, remember to apply your recycling skills to keep our campus clean and climate friendly.
