There are so many ways you can get involved with volunteering whilst you're studying here at LJMU!
If you want to get stuck in, give something back and meet some amazing people, take a look at some of the current opportunities we have. Not only does volunteering give you the feel-good factor, but it helps boost your confidence, gain some incredible skills, and you can make a real difference in the local community too!
One of our charity partners, The Brain Charity, offers emotional support, practical help and social activities to anyone with a neurological condition and to their family, friends, and carers. There are hundreds of different neurological conditions, including stroke, brain injury, dementia, cluster headaches, and many rarer ones too - and they are here for every single one!
Their mission is to enable all those affected by neurological conditions to live longer, healthier, happier lives, fighting together for an inclusive and just society. A world where stigma, hardship and isolation are replaced by compassion and understanding. Here's how you can get involved:
Telephone Phone Befrienders
This is a home-based role (so could be done from anywhere) which involves making weekly calls to someone who is isolated as a result of their neurological condition. Usual commitment is 1hr per week minimum, for at least 1 term (ideally 1 year).
Front of house/reception
This involves answering & transferring calls, sending email messages, greeting visitors, franking & posting mail etc on the front desk of our call centre on Norton Street, Liverpool. Usual commitment is one ½ day per week, for at least 1 term (ideally 1 year).
Finance Assistant
We are currently looking for someone to support our finance team with admin assistance one day per week for at least 1 term.
Social Media
We are looking for someone to help us draft social posts one day per week. This could be done from home or our office. Usually one full day or split over smaller increments, (for at least 1 term but ideally 1 year).
eBay
We are looking for 2 volunteers to help manage our eBay account. This involves photographing items for eBay, writing descriptions, uploading listings etc. ideal commitment is one ½ day per week minimum & would need to be done from our centre (for at least 1 term).
Hear from a fellow LJMU student and volunteer!
Hi, I’m Georgia, I have just completed a Media, Culture and Communications at Liverpool John Moores University. I have always had an interest and drive for media and marketing and loved my degree. I not only love volunteering for The Brain Charity but love what the charity does for its clients. I am proud to volunteer for The Brain Charity as I have a family history of neurological conditions so I am able to understand both perspectives. Volunteering has been extremely rewarding as the posts you create and share are vital for spreading awareness or even brightening someone's day. The Brain Charity has taught me about the disability community, the many different conditions that occur and how they affect people’s daily lives. I am more aware about the struggles people face, not only physically but with everyday problems, like shopping or seeking employment, and how we can support and make a change. I would definitely recommend The Brain Charity to any student looking to further their skillset and build your confidence as an employee. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have interned for such an incredible and impactful charity.
