This volunteer role has been created to help KFCA develop our children’s library, which was funded in 2021 by Steve Morgan Foundation. 

We provide weekly help-to-read session at our after school club, shared reading for parents & children such as our popular Books & Babies sessions, creative writing, arts & drama……. all of which are designed to improve literacy skills and boost the joy of reading. 

KFCA is a registered charity and a member of the Community Managed Libraries Network.

 

Working under supervision you will: 

  • help deliver after school club library sessions with children aged 5 to 16 years of age
  • help during school holidays to deliver creative writing, arts & drama activities
  • help deliver sessions with parents & carers so they can support their children’s literacy 
  • help develop new library and creative arts projects & activities 
  • help us to improve the range of books we have and make our library resources as welcoming as possible 
  • help set up sessions e.g. setting up tables & chairs, setting out refreshments, getting equipment out / putting it all away at the end, tidying up 

We particularly welcome students sharing the knowledge from their courses & own ideas to help us improve our library, education & creative projects work.

 

  • A passion for reading & literacy
  • Confidence to read out loud with children 
  • Confidence to speak with staff, parents and other volunteers and encourage the joy of reading
  • Understanding of and respect for a range of cultures, backgrounds and diversities 
  • Good communication skills – friendly, helpful, calm & confident approach
  • Good spoken English
  • Good timekeeping
  • Well organised
  • Willingness to take up optional further training e.g. how to deliver a shared reading class (food & travel costs will be provided).

This role does not require a DBS check.

This role is suited to a student who is doing an English literature course, PGCE, librarian studies, writing, performing arts, children & young peoples studies, a course that has an element of social justice, political studies, community engagement or civic involvement…… and has a desire to help children & families boost their enjoyment of written and spoken word.

We will reimburse costs for travel to & from the centre (mileage / bus fares), free food & refreshments and provide free parking if required.
