VP Community and Wellbeing

Contract: Fixed-term, twelve-month contract, starting from 1st July 2024. The position can be taken either as a sabbatical (taking a year out from your course) or as a graduate role (starting after you finish your final year). They are 12-month posts, but you can re-run for a second year if you choose. 

JMSU is offering for this post:

Summary of the Role: 

The VP Community and Wellbeing works to make sure that LJMU students feel happy, healthy and safe during their time at university. They work on improving accommodation, safety and transport and are the face of LJMU students for the local community, local councils and national government. They also get to work on their own campaigns, which are supported by the Student Union’s staff team. All Student Officers are also a Trustee for the organisation and sit on the Trustee Board for JMSU.  

General Responsibilities 

  • Set the strategic direction of JMSU and identify what priorities staff should work on to improve the lives of students. 
  • Attend the JMSU’s Board of Trustees. This includes responsibility for ensuring the SU is running effectively and not spending over budget or going against the core objectives of the SU. 
  • Work with the Chief Executive to ensure SU staff are supported and working on SU objectives.
  • Spend time talking to students, finding out what their issues are and letting them know what officers are working on.
  • Oversee, review and develop the democratic processes of JMSU
  • Work to maintain and develop contacts with other organisations and Students’ Unions.
  • Represent students to the University on relevant issues, including sitting on the relevant committees of the University.
  • Sit on student appeal and disciplinary panels, to provide a student voice, as appropriate. 
  • Work with NUS to represent students nationally and support any national campaigns to improve students’ lives. 
  • Will often be required to speak on behalf of students to the University, external organisations or the media. 
  • Present to students at various events e.g. during welcome week to welcome new students to the University. 

Specific Responsibilities 

  • Be a representative at meetings with local councillors, discussing issues such as student safety, health and wellbeing. 
  • Work with community partners (such as Merseyside Police, Liverpool Student Homes and Community Centres) to make sure students living in Liverpool are safe in their accommodation. 
  • Develop relationships with LJMU colleagues, such as Student Advice and Wellbeing to ensure a joined up approach to campaigns. 
  • Respond appropriately to student queries regarding welfare.
